Cialis UK: What is it and how does it work?

Cialis is the brand name of tadalafil, the generic of Cialis. It is the active ingredient in Cialis, and is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).Cialisis a popular medication for ED. Unlike Cialis, which is a selective and short-acting medicine, Cialis works by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) in the body. By inhibiting PDE5, Cialis relaxes blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the penis and making it easier for a man to achieve and maintain an erection. Cialis is also used for PAH, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteriaStreptococcus pneumoniae

Interactions

A. Top Drug-Drug Interactions:

1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).

2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.

3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.

Other Drug-Drug interactions:

  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole (used to manage fungal infection)
  • Protease inhibitors (used to manage HIV infection) Ex. ritonavir, lopinavir
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine (medicines used for fits)
  • Rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin (medicines used for bacterial infections)
  • Other medicines used to improve blood flow to the penis (Ex. sildenafil)

B. Drug-Food Interactions:

Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:

  1. Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice: Grapefruit can increase the levels of tadalafil in your blood by interfering with its metabolism. This may amplify side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, or low blood pressure. Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Cialis.
  2. Alcohol: Drinking alcohol with Cialis can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects of the medication, leading to symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Limiting alcohol intake is recommended while using Cialis.
  3. High-Fat Meals: While Cialis can be taken with or without food, consuming it with a high-fat meal may delay its onset of action. Opt for lighter meals if rapid effectiveness is needed.
  4. Caffeine: Though not a direct interaction, combining Cialis with high caffeine intake might worsen side effects like headaches or increase heart rate in sensitive individuals.
Added/Filleders:

Key added/ subti/ueges:

  • Nitrates: This medication reduces blood pressure by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps symptoms like dizziness and blurred vision. It is contraindicated in certain individuals with a history of: 1. Bacterial infection or sexually transmitted infections (e.g., vaginitis; HIV; genital warts; or trichomoniasis).
  • Alpha-blockers: It is not necessary to avoid high levels of nitrates with Cialis, but blocking them may worsecy with the medications. It is usually used with medications for heart conditions like: Amyl nitrate or nitrite supplements 2. Boric acid 1. Boric acid Sanctions Calcium together with Cialis, increasing blood flow to the penis.

I’ve been taking the daily dose of Cialis for about 10 years, and I have been taking this for about 5 years now. I have heard that it may have a lower risk of side effects than the generic version of Cialis, but I haven’t had any experience with it at all.

Now that the Cialis (10mg) has been discontinued, I’m looking into trying a generic version that has a lower risk of side effects. I have found that there are some generic versions of tadalafil (Cialis) that are better on the same efficacy. I would generally recommend taking the generic version of Cialis with a glass of water for 5 minutes before taking the Cialis.

In general, I have not taken any Cialis and not been taking any of the generic tadalafil. I have noticed a slight increase in my libido and my sexual drive but not all that much. My sexual drive is still much higher than when I started taking the Cialis (10mg). I also have noticed that I get a bit more energy from sex. My sex drive is not great, but it’s not very high. I would definitely try another medication and see if that would work for you.

My question is, is there a difference between Cialis and tadalafil and what can I try and see if there is anything that you would recommend to my husband?

I’m curious about any side effects you experience with Cialis or tadalafil, and if you have any tips for dealing with them.

Thanks,

Dorothy
